Lot 2016 SCARCE FULL STOCK BIG BORE RIFLE BY PETERLONGO.
Cal. 11.2 x 72 (Schuler ?) . S# 6328 (on bolt) (1909). The 24-1/4" one third octagon 2/3 round ribbed barrel is fitted with one standing one folding leaf rear sight and silver bead front in raised portion of rib. Top right flat is engraved "Tiroler Waffenfabrik"; left, "Joh. Peterlongo Innsbruck". 1909 Ferlach nitro proofs are on right flat. Commercial model 98 Mauser action (S# 26311 found on bottom of action and rear of magazine when out of wood) is fitted with Gewehr 98 bolt S# 6328 which is original to this rifle. Original bottom metal with early Mauser type double set triggers has been deepened with addition of a plate attached to bottom of action to accept this fairly large cartridge that uses a standard bolt face. Action is engraved with sprays of well cut scrolls within geometric and line borders. Full length stock made of lightly figured European walnut measures 13-3/4" over checkered horn buttplate and features small shadow line right hand cheekpiece and point pattern checkering. Forend is shaped with small schnable below sliding bolt barrel fastener and extends to muzzle with schnabled horn tip. A bail type sling loop is fitted with matching loop on butt. CONDITION: very fine as lightly refinished. Metal retaining nearly all of a sympathetic re-black. Stock with lightly renewed oil finish over some marks and dings. Bore is bright and shiny. Action is smooth. Horn buttplate shows some light moth damage on edges. PROVENANCE: From the Buckstix Collection. (25-6444/MGM). CURIO. $4,000-6,000.
